Navigating Paradise: A Guide to Smith Mountain Lake’s Marinas
A trip to Smith Mountain Lake, VA isn’t complete without checking out the local marinas, they are a huge part of lake life and SML’s unique charm! Foodies, outdoor & water enthusiasts, boaters, music lovers, or anyone looking for a cold beer or cocktail - this post is for you! Each marina offers its own unique blend of food, music, entertainment and services for a day you won’t forget. On our first visit we were a little overwhelmed about all of the different marinas and weren’t sure were to go or what the must-sees or dos in the area were. This guide helps take the guess work out of it and will let you get straight to enjoying the day and what SML has to offer.
Bridgewater Marina and Plaza 16410 Booker T Washington Hwy #5865, Moneta, VA 24121
Located in the heart of Smith Mountain Lake, Bridgewater Plaza Marina is a bustling hub of activity and excitement for visitors and locals alike. With easy access to shopping (the best SML swag and the coziest SML hoodies!), dining, and entertainment, Bridgewater Plaza Marina is a must visit place - for all ages.
Enjoy a cold drink and a great meal at the popular bar and restaurant Mango’s , go to their Facebook Page to check out their live music and events schedule, they have a large stage in the middle of the marina and have awesome bands play regularly! It’s got a cool vibe and is always bustling, kid friendly too.
Feed the fish! Our kids LOVE this (and being honest, we do too.) You can buy popcorn at Bridgewater Marina & Boat Rentals to feed the fish at the marina. Just walk around back, it’s on the opposite end then Mango’s, near Harbortown putt-putt golf. The popcorn is plain and unsalted, and you can throw it to the dozens and dozens of carp that are regulars there. All of the proceeds from popcorn sales are donated to Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia Foundation. It’s a really unique and fun experience!
There's also rock climbing, a really fun put-put golf course with great lake views, a fudge and gift shop from Gifts Ahoy, and more great food and drinks at Moosie's, Smith Mountain Lake Coffeehouse (we pop in most mornings for a pastry and coffee), Pizza Pub and the Ice Cream Cottage. There are also lake toy and boat rentals and a large arcade that you have to check out if you have kids. It’s a large marina and plaza with so much for everyone to do!
GoodHue Boat Company – Blackwater (formerly known as Crazy Horse Marina) 1617 Crystal Shores Dr #4573, Moneta, VA 24121
Situated on the northern end of Smith Mountain Lake, Crazy Horse Marina stands out for it’s ability to entertain! It boasts a popular restaurant, Los Amigos Bar and Grill, offers year round entertainment, live concerts and boat rentals. Crazy Horse Marina’s events include an awesome summer concert series on a Pon-tune Stage, Pirate Days, and Knot-A-Fest. Boasting a full-service marina with boat rentals, a 24/7 self serve fueling station, and slip rentals, Crazy Horse is a one-stop destination for all your needs. After a day on the water, we highly recommend unwinding with a margarita at Los Amigos or relax by the little beach area where kids can splash around in the lake.
For another unique experience, look at renting a houseboat that sleeps 10+ people for a truly unique getaway on the lake! Houseboats can be picked up at Crazy Horse, Mitchell’s Point and Virginia Dare Cruises Marina.
Mitchell's Point Marina 3553 Trading Post Rd, Huddleston, VA 24104
Tucked away in a secluded cove on the eastern shores of Smith Mountain Lake, Mitchell's Point Marina offers a peaceful retreat for visitors and boaters. Mitchell’s has been voted BEST for their pizza, live music and place to watch the sunset (highly recommend watching the sun set here with a drink in hand.) Mitchell's Point is your gateway to adventure on the water! Be sure to explore the surrounding coves and hidden gems that make this marina a true hidden treasure. Mitchell’s Restaurant and Pizzeria check out their Facebook page for all details on events and live music. They have a great vibe, super friendly staff, good food and great music!
GoodHue Boat Company – Eastlake (formerly known as Crystal Shores Marina) 1617 Crystal Shores Dr., Moneta, VA 24121

Located on the eastern side of Smith Mountain Lake not far from Bridgewater Marina, Crystal Shores Marina welcomes all visitors and is the perfect destination for a day of fun in the sun. It is home to Drifters, a fantastic restaurant on the lake that won for BEST outdoor dining area and for their cocktails. We can 100% recommend both!
Gill’s Creek Marina and Lodge 790 1302, Wirtz, VA 24184
Gill’s Creek is a full service marina with a lodge where you can book a room right on the lake and it is home to the Annual SML Fishing Tournament. A one stop shop!
Magnum Point Marina 2200 Old Salem School Rd, Union Hall, VA 24176
Magnum Point is on the Blackwater side of the lake and is another great spot to check out by car or by boat. They offer year round covered boat slips/lifts, gas, snacks, drinks and a great restaurant. Be sure to check out their Facebook Page for updates on food and drink specials, events and music!
Virginia Dare Cruises and Marina 3619 Airport Rd, Moneta, VA 24121
This unique marina features the awesome restaurant Portside Grill and Bar (highly recommend, it has the coolest vibe) and is home to Virginia Dare Cruises where you can book a specialty cruise around the lake that includes your food, drinks and great sightseeing. Portside Grill and Bar is one of our favorite little spots on the lake to visit for a laid back vibe, great music, a local feel, delicious food and of course… awesome drinks!
