A Dive into the History of Smith Mountain Lake
After a quick weekend visit to Smith Mountain Lake in 2021, we fell in love with the lake’s beauty, the mountains and everything it had to offer our family of 3 (now family of 5)! When we left, I had to know more… how, when, why? What were the reasons behind this amazing place?!

I did the work for you and want to share the deep and interesting history. Whether you are preparing for your first visit to the lake or your 100th or writing a school report… here’s a dive into the unique history of Virginia’s 2nd Largest Lake, Smith Mountain Lake.

Smith Mountain Lake stands as a testament to nature's beauty and human ingenuity. The story of Smith Mountain Lake begins in the mid-20th century, with the ambitious vision of using the power of the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers to meet the growing energy needs of the region. In the 1920s, discussions and plans for constructing a hydroelectric dam gained popularity, aiming to create a reservoir that would not only generate electricity but also provide flood control and recreational opportunities for the surrounding areas.
In 1963, construction began on what would become the Smith Mountain Dam, a monumental feat of engineering that would forever alter the landscape of the region! Over the course of six years, thousands of workers worked tirelessly to complete the dam, which stands at an impressive height of 235 feet and spans the width of the Roanoke River. (We recommend checking out the dam by boat or by foot when you’re visiting!)
As the dam took shape, the waters began to rise, gradually filling the valleys below. By 1966, the reservoir behind the dam had reached full capacity, giving rise to what we now know as Smith Mountain Lake. Stretching across 20,600 acres and boasting over 500 miles of shoreline, the lake quickly became a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
But the creation of Smith Mountain Lake was more than just a triumph of engineering—it was a catalyst for economic growth for the surrounding communities. The lake's pristine waters and scenic beauty attracted tourists and vacationers from far and wide, spurring the development of resorts, marinas, and recreational companies along its shores.

Over the years, Smith Mountain Lake has evolved into a beloved destination for boating, fishing, swimming, and other water-based activities. Its tranquil and hidden coves offer sanctuary to those seeking solace and serenity amid the hustle and bustle of modern life. Every time we visit, we still discover a new cove we haven’t visited before!
Yet, amidst the splendor of its natural surroundings, Smith Mountain Lake remains steeped in history, with remnants of the past scattered throughout its shores. A quick boat ride to the north end of the lake will be a walk into the past, from sunken barges and submerged bridges to the remnants of old homesteads and farms, the lake serves as a living testament to the generations who came before.
As we continue to write new chapters and enjoy everything that Smith Mountain Lake has to offer, may we remember to preserve the legacy of the lake and ensure that future generations will also enjoy a landscape rich in history, beauty, and wonder!
