Smith Mountain Lake FAQ: First Time at Smith Mountain Lake? Start Here.
If you're planning your first trip to Smith Mountain Lake, welcome — you've picked a pretty incredible place.
We still remember our first visit. We drove down from Maryland to look at a few properties, not knowing much about the area besides hearing people rave about "the lake." By the end of the weekend, we'd fallen completely in love. We actually put an offer on our lot the very next day!
There's just something about this place. Maybe it's the quiet coves, mornings on the water, or the fact that you can spend the day boating and still be docked at a waterfront restaurant for dinner. Whatever it is, Smith Mountain Lake has a way of making people come back year after year.
If you've never been before, you probably have a lot of questions. Is the water clean? Do you need a boat? What's the best time to visit? Are there good restaurants? (Spoiler alert: yes!)
We've rounded up the questions we hear most often from first-time visitors (or questions we asked ourselves) so you can spend less time Googling and more time getting excited about your trip.
The south end of the lake offers beautiful views of the mountain, while the north end is less developed and peaceful.

Absolutely!
Swimming is one of the most popular summer activities. The water is generally clean, warm during the summer months, and ideal for floating, paddleboarding, tubing, and simply cooling off.

There are also designated swimming beaches, including those at Smith Mountain Lake State Park.

Yes.
Smith Mountain Lake is considered one of Virginia's cleanest recreational lakes. Water quality is regularly monitored, making it a popular destination for swimming, boating, and fishing.
As with any natural body of water, conditions can vary after heavy rainfall, but overall, visitors are often surprised by how clear the water is.
Are there alligators or sharks?
No.
There are no alligators living in Smith Mountain Lake, and of course, there are no sharks either. You may occasionally spot turtles, herons, osprey, deer along the shoreline, and plenty of fish—but nothing that should keep you out of the water.

Spring (March–May): Perfect weather for hiking, kayaking, fishing, and avoiding crowds.
Summer (June–August): The busiest season with warm water, boating, live music, restaurants, and family activities.

Can you rent boats?

Popular options include:

During summer, it's a good idea to reserve your rental well in advance, especially on holiday weekends. We recommend Parrot Cove Boat Rentals, we have rented from them for years and always have a great experience.
What kinds of fish are in Smith Mountain Lake?
Smith Mountain Lake is considered one of Virginia's top fishing destinations.
Common catches include:
Striped bass
Largemouth bass

Whether you're an experienced angler or introducing your kids to fishing, there are opportunities throughout the year. We have hired charters to take our fishing obsessed sons out for striped bass, highly recommend for the fishing enthusiasts!
Are there restaurants on the water?
Yes—and that's one of the best parts about visiting.
Many restaurants offer boat docks, allowing you to pull up, tie off, and enjoy lunch or dinner before heading back out on the water.
From casual burgers to fresh seafood and sunset cocktails, waterfront dining is one of the signature experiences at Smith Mountain Lake. Check out our post about all waterfront restaurants!
Are there grocery stores nearby?
Yes.
You'll find grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, and other essentials within a short drive of most vacation rentals.
I always place a pick up order at The Food Lion in Moneta, and stop on our way to the rental house, so we can settle in and start relaxing right away! Walmart also offers grocery drop off to some rentals within a certain distance.
Do NOT recommend trying your luck with Door Dash or Uber Eats. We have placed orders, and had drivers never confirm to pick up - so, the order ultimately gets cancelled.
Is there cell service and Wi-Fi?
Most areas around Smith Mountain Lake have reliable cell service, and nearly all vacation rentals offer high-speed Wi-Fi.
Where should we stay?
The right accommodations depend on the type of vacation you're planning.
Hotels work well for quick overnight visits, while cabins offer a cozy mountain-lake atmosphere.
For families, groups, and longer stays, a lakefront vacation rental provides the most space, privacy, and amenities.
If you're looking for something a little different, unique stays are becoming increasingly popular. Properties like our very own, The Hidden Box, combine modern architecture, natural surroundings, and thoughtfully designed spaces to create a stay that's just as memorable as the destination itself.
