Why a Striper Fishing Charter Should Be on Your Smith Mountain Lake Bucket List
When people think about visiting Smith Mountain Lake, they usually picture boating, tubing, waterfront restaurants, and relaxing on the dock. But after our latest trip, there's one experience we'd tell almost anyone to add to their itinerary, a guided striper fishing charter.
The boys were SO excited with their very first striped bass!
None of us really knew what to expect. We booked a half-day trip hoping to catch a few fish for our fishing obsessed boys and enjoy some time on the water. What we got was so much more than that!
It Was Like a Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Lake
One of the coolest parts of the trip wasn't just catching huge striped bass —it was learning how it all works.
Our captain showed the boys the electronics used to find schools of striped bass beneath the boat. They were completely fascinated watching fish appear on the sonar screen and then seeing how that information helped decide where we'd fish next. It turned something that seemed simple into a really hands-on learning experience. The boys also loved helping with the live bait. Getting to open the bait tank, see the bait swimming around, and help get everything ready was just as exciting to them as catching the fish.
More Than Just Fishing
Between moving to different spots, we even stopped so the kids could jump in and swim while we waited for the bass to bite! That's one of the things we love about Smith Mountain Lake. Even when you have a plan for the day, there's always time to slow down, enjoy the water, and make it your own. We never felt stressed or rushed, just enjoyed the day on the lake.
Catching Dinner
We ended up catching three striped bass, which was exciting enough on its own.
As the sun was setting over the lake, our captain filleted all of the fish for us right on the boat while we put our final line in the water and waited for any last bites. Instead of wondering what to do with our catch, we simply took home three XXL fresh fillets, cooked them that evening, and had one of the freshest dinners we've ever had! There's something really satisfying about catching your own meal and enjoying it just a few hours later. (The kids were VERY excited for dinner)!
One of Our Favorite Family Activities at Smith Mountain Lake
Looking back, the fishing was only part of what made the day special.
It was watching our boys ask a hundred questions, seeing their excitement every time the rods bent, learning something new together, swimming in the middle of the lake, and ending the day with fresh fish for dinner. Those are the memories we'll remember long after we've forgotten exactly how many fish we caught.
If You're Thinking About Booking a Charter...
We went with Captain Justin from Seek First Fishing, and he was fantastic. Book him here, he was very responsive via his business Facebook account.
What stood out most was how patient he was with our kids. He took time to explain what he was doing, answered every question they had, and genuinely wanted them to be part of the experience instead of just along for the ride. Our trip was scheduled as a half-day charter, but he even kept us out about an hour longer so we'd have more opportunities to catch fish. That wasn't something we expected, but it says a lot about how much he cares about making sure families have a great experience. There are several great fishing guides on Smith Mountain Lake, but we wouldn't hesitate to recommend him if you're looking for someone who's knowledgeable, friendly, and especially great with kids.
If you're planning a trip to Smith Mountain Lake, don't overlook a fishing charter—even if no one in your family considers themselves a "fisherman."
We didn't just come home with fish. We came home with one of our favorite memories from the lake.
