Things to Do at SML: A Mom’s Guide to Fun and Organized Chaos

If you had told me a few years ago that my husband and I would design and build our dream vacation rental home on Smith Mountain Lake, I probably would’ve laughed in between wrangling our three wild boys. But here we are—after buying a waterfront piece of paradise in 2021, spending a year designing the perfect lake house, and now making it come to life and build a place where both our family and guests can make lifelong memories.

Smith Mountain Lake is more than just a beautiful getaway—it's an adventure-packed haven for families, couples, and anyone looking to soak up lake life. Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or planning an extended stay, here’s a list of the best things to do in and around SML (tested and approved by a family of five who thrives on fun and exhaustion).

On the Water: The Real Reason You’re Here

🚤 Rent a Boat – There’s no better way to experience Smith Mountain Lake than from the water. Whether you're tubing with the kids, fishing in a quiet cove, or just cruising with a drink in hand (because let’s be real, parents deserve it), renting a boat is a must. Several marinas offer rentals, including Bridgewater Marina and Parrot Cove Boat Rentals.

🏄‍♂️ Try Water Sports – If your kids are like mine, they’ll have zero fear and want to attempt wakeboarding, waterskiing, or kneeboarding. If you're new to it, book a lesson or start slow with tubing—it's the perfect mix of thrill and chaos.

🎣 Go Fishing – The lake is known for its striped bass, and even if your kids lose interest after five minutes (mine always do), there’s something peaceful about casting a line at sunrise. If you’re serious about fishing, consider hiring a local guide for a chartered trip. Some reputable options include:

🌅 Sunset Cruise – After a long day of chasing kids and trying to keep everyone from falling in the water, an evening cruise is the perfect way to wind down. Grab a cocktail, enjoy the views, and let the lake do its magic.

Off the Water: Because Kids Need to Burn More Energy

🐐 Visit Smith Mountain Lake Farm Alpacas – If your kids are obsessed with animals (or if you just need a break from all the lake excitement), this alpaca farm is a great stop. You can feed, pet, and learn about these adorable creatures.

🐠 Feed the Fish at Bridgewater Plaza – One of the simplest yet most entertaining activities for little ones is stopping by Bridgewater Plaza to feed the massive carp that gather near the docks. Grab a handful of fish food from the vending machines and watch the water come alive as the fish swarm for a snack. It’s a great (and cheap) way to keep kids entertained while you take in the lake views. You can buy popcorn at Bridgewater Marina & Boat Rentals to feed the fish. Just walk around back, it’s on the opposite end then Mango’s, near Harbortown Mini golf. The popcorn is plain and unsalted, and you can throw it to the dozens and dozens of carp that are regulars there. All of the proceeds from popcorn sales are donated to Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia Foundation. It’s a really unique and fun experience, a must do every visit for our family.

🏞️ Hike Smith Mountain Lake State Park – There are plenty of family-friendly trails where you can let the kids run wild without worrying about them falling overboard. The Turtle Island Trail is an easy favorite with beautiful water views.

Mini Golf at Harbortown – Mini golf is always a hit, especially when there’s ice cream involved. Harbortown Mini-Golf in Moneta is a fun, low-stress activity (until your kids start fighting over who won).

🐟 The Virginia Dare Cruise – A two-hour sightseeing cruise that gives you lake history, gorgeous views, and the option to eat and drink while someone else does the driving. It’s family-friendly but also great for date night if you manage to sneak away.

🚲 Bike the Parkway – The Blue Ridge Parkway is just a short drive away, and while my boys aren’t quite ready for big rides yet, there are plenty of scenic stops, picnic spots, and easy trails to explore. Our rental property comes equipped with bikes for your convenience. If you need additional bikes or specialized options, Smith Mountain Lake State Park offers rentals at their Visitor Center for $5 per hour or $15 for four hours or more.

You will see so much wildlife on hikes around SML! This was a fawn we spotted while walking around The Hidden Box lot.

Where to Eat: Because No One Wants to Cook on Vacation

🍔 Drifter’s – A great lakeside spot with casual food and a fun atmosphere. If you boat up, you get extra cool points from the kids.

🍕 Napoli by the Lake – The best pizza spot in the area, and let’s be honest, pizza is a necessity when traveling with kids.

🦞 The Landing – If you’re looking for something a little nicer but still family-friendly, The Landing has incredible seafood and lakeside views.

🍦 Homestead Creamery – If your family operates on a "vacation means ice cream every night" policy like ours does, this is a must-visit. The milkshakes are life-changing.

Feeding the carp at Bridgewater Plaza is always a highlight of a trip to SML!

Making Memories, One Crazy Moment at a Time

Beginning to build our dream lake house has been an adventure, and sharing Smith Mountain Lake with other families is something we’re so excited about. Whether you're here for the thrill, the relaxation, or just to let your kids run wild while you sip coffee on the deck, there’s something special about this place.

So, if you’re looking for a vacation filled with adventure, laughter, and maybe a little bit of chaos (in the best way possible), SML is waiting for you. And if you happen to stay at our home, know that it was built with love, laughter, and the hope that other families will make just as many unforgettable memories here as we do.
